Cattleyas are best known for their fragrance and use as corsages in years past. These orchids are originally from Central and South America, and today, the choices are almost endless for color, and size. Cattleyas are comprised from many related types of orchids to include Laelia, Brassavola, Sophronitis and Encyclia. How do you grow these beauties? Provide them with good light, but take care to protect them from direct sunlight as a way to prevent burning the leaves. Flowers will develop on the new growths produced from the pseudobulbs. Pseudobulbs act as a water source for the plant, meaning that you don't want to overwater. Let the plant dry out slightly before watering as a general rule. Cattleyas prefer a humid growing area, and like to be fed "weekly, weakly" with a well balanced fertilizer. Use a 20-20-20 formula, and before flowering occurs, use an orchid fertilizer with a higher middle number which will assist in producing healthy, large, and bright flowers.
